Hello fellas, its been awhile since I was in the league. Did we need a restart, and why do you thin we needed a restart?
Sargo - As much as I didn’t want a restart since I landed David Robinson, it was needed. The league was way too inflated. Too many guys with elite handles and blocks. We are off to a clean start and I’m here for it.
Habes - We didn’t need one, but things were slowing down and the waitlist was thin. It was a good time to restart and I’m glad we did. It’ll take a few seasons for things to really get going here but I’m pumped about the new league.
Chipper - I was kind of sad we restarted because I liked the team I had (and I was getting the Hawks!) but I am happy to actually get to do a creation draft with everyone and have the Hawks this go-round.
DBW - Yo welcome back! I was against the restart and hated that a loud minority of Kobe/Habes/Skillz were putting the restart talk in every thread. We were just getting into an incredibly fun period in the NBA. The file being inflated is one thing, but many of the dominant players were older anyway. I don't believe trading will be fixed either. Having been with this group for years now, it's clear that half or maybe even more of the GMs here just don't want to trade, for whatever reason. That's not changing just because we restarted. You was who you was before you got here. I've also never been in a league that successfully looped back to the modern era after going through retro. I thought BBS2020 was going to be the one...
Creation drafts tend to be slow when it comes to trades, do you think we will see an uptick in trades here soon once teams get more defined roles as far as who is actually tanking and winning?
Sargo - Its tough because we can only deal 3 firsts. Most contending teams already dealt all of their picks. We might not see major deals until the offseason.
Habes - I think we’ll see teams start to abandon their plans late this season and this offseason. It’s so early, but a bunch of teams, mine included, could decide they’re not good enough to compete and decide to tear down or retool.
Chipper - This is BBS. Of course there's going to be an uptick in trades once the roles are defined. Some people came in thinking they were going to have not as good a team, but with how many teams are tanking hard, have no choice but to try a little bit to win.
DBW - Trades will probably ramp up in the off-season. Everyone who has traded 3 1sts will have a 2000 1st Rounder to trade, we'll have the 1997 draft guys coming in, a free agency to work with etc. I saw some posts complaining about trades in the sim thread already, but I don't remember a time where trades were crazy immediately after a creation draft. I think this is fairly normal... but to my point in the 1st question, I think we have a large amount of GMs that shy away from trades regardless.
This draft class is already uploaded, anything you guys would want to see changed, or added?
Sargo - I really wish KVH and TT were SFs and not stuck at PF. Seems weird and forced. Hopefully Spencer reconsiders. Other than that, I wish we would have more random classes so we don’t have teams (like myself) bottoming out for a certain class. Having guys stay a year in college longer or come out a year earlier to mix up the classes would be fun.
Habes - Nope. Looks great. I knew the classes would be nice, and they have to be to build excitement because otherwise rebuilding guys won’t have interest.
Chipper - Nah- class looks good to me. I didn't necessarily agree with others on the ratings being "inflated"- and I'd rather see some rookies start off like they did in the old league- but with the camp system staying as is to promote activity, there is no other way to curb inflation other than nerfing the starting ratings.
DBW - Kobe and I were in the draft thread trying to get Duncan nerfed lol. I like the file though. McGrady and Stephen Jackson look especially good to me. Ricky Davis and Chauncey are cool. I would like to see God Shammgod be good here, I wish his ratings were a bit higher.
Some teams have had great starts, who do you think are the favorites after 2 sims?
Sargo - Probably the Spurs and Celtics. Both look legit. Big fan of the Heat too if they can get a DC working.
Habes - Grizz look loaded. I think they’re the favorites. Celts and Heat look nice too.
Chipper - Spurs. They're just too good and have too much depth. Other teams can't hang with them because of that depth.
DBW - The flavor of the league seems to be Spurs right now, but I think the Celtics are the favorite. Scoring options at the big, wing and PG spots. Elite defense/steals everywhere. Dream is only a B rebounder so I made sure to pick plus rebounders at every other position. Mookie is the 2nd best reb PG, Majerle was high amongst SGs, Loy Vaught, Detlef... It's early but I like my chances.
If you had the 1st pick in the creation draft who would you have chosen? Why?
Sargo - Kobe probably. He might not be the best, but it’s fucking kobe! Shaqs a stud too.
Habes - KG all day. Kobe was a good option too but I can’t pass on a big that promising. Don’t think anyone else was close to those two.
Chipper - Has to be Kobe. Only 18 and already one of the best players in the league. There's no debate, IMO.
DBW - I would have drafted Shaq at #1. A A A ratings at 24 is crazy. He shoots over 50% FG since he probably is close to 100 inside and strength, gives you elite rebounds and blocks and has a good handle. He's getting teams in foul trouble too. I can live with the terrible jumpshot considering everything else.
Steve made an article about who had the best future in the league, who do you believe set themselves up for success in the future?
Sargo - I’m hoping his article is correct and it’s us, the Hornets. Big fan of my bigs. Now just need to add wings and a PG in the offseason.
Habes - Nobody really stands out. A lot of the guys who decided to go young reached for youth, and when you can only deal picks two seasons out, it’s not really that valuable to load up on picks. I don’t think any of the teams that loaded up on picks really got themselves far ahead of the pack. John was able to get the best youth piece and compete, so I can’t say anyone’s ahead of him. Among the tanking teams, it’s just gonna come down to who gets Duncan.
Chipper - Probably the Hornets- but whoever gets Duncan will probably get my vote.
DBW - Wizards have a bunch of younger players that can actually play right now. I also like the Bulls and Thunder guys.
I've noticed people wanting some changes to the camping system lately, would you change anything? If so what would you change? If not why do you like the system that is in place?
Sargo - Always open to changes that can benefit the league. Maybe I’d recommend a mentor type camp where all stars can mention a guy at the same position. Would give value to older vets too. NBN does something like this.
Habes - Nah. Camping system is great. Simple to understand, reasonable to achieve, generates activity, and the rewards are solid.
Chipper - This is tough- I think leaving it as is would be fine. It seemed to work just fine for the last 70+ seasons of the last iteration of BBS, so I see no need to fix what isn't broken.
DBW - I am fine if the camp system stays the same but as we are so focused on keeping the ratings low, there are a number of things we could do. I don't like when people are banking ACs from a post pad that was 6 seasons ago so they can dump +24 into a draft pick at any time. I think that's a contributing factor to these files getting out of control but I might be the minority.
Name a player that you are most excited to join the league, or maybe already in the league.
Sargo - TMAC for the immediate future. He looks raw, but I’m sure he’s sitting on 100 potential. Bring him home to me!!
Habes - VC, Dirk, Marion, Odom, Manu come to mind over the next few seasons.
Chipper - I mean, it's always going to be the guys like LeBron and Wade, etc. I always love seeing how my favourite RL Hawks players do too.
DBW - I love Gary Payton, Ray Allen, Antoine Walker, honestly there are too many to count. I'm 34 and 1997 is just a few years away from my era of basketball so I love a lot of these guys. 98 draft though! Pierce, Carter, Dirk, White chocolate! Bibby, Lafrentz.. thats my favorite draft class of all time.
Now to non-league related stuff. What are your thoughts on the NBA's in-season tournament? Courts, do you like them? Have you noticed teams playing a different way then normal regular season games?
Sargo - The tourney is fine. The courts are disgusting and need to change. I just wish this tourny was taking place all at once instead of one game a week. Tough for guys to go all out then play regular season games. Next year they should do it during like a 2-3 week period all at once.
Habes - I’m into it. I like the courts and I love the incentive to keep scoring in blowouts. I just think the tournament should be a special event, like one week in Vegas where the top 12 teams by record or something like that play a tournament. Mixing the qualifiers in with regular season games isn’t that exciting. It should be more of a standalone event.
Chipper - I think it's long overdue. I think it's great the NBA is doing this given how well it works in European soccer. The courts are horrendous- need to do a better job there. And I haven't noticed much of a difference between it and the regular season- only because I've watched the Hawks games and they're hot/cold both in tournament and out.
DBW - The courts are wild bro. I really wonder how the players can even make out where the out of bounds line is on some of them. But I am enjoying the in-season games so far. I do feel there has been a playoff feel in many of the games. Definitely the Celtics-Pacers semi-final game was intense. I'll be watching the Finals in Vegas for sure. I like what I'm seeing.
NFL season is already half way over, name one thing that surprised you, and one thing that played out exactly how you thought it would.
Sargo - I didn’t think Stroud would be this good this quick. Loved him in the draft and was my #1 QB but he’s exceeding expectations. Not shocked at all about the Pats sucking ass. Tried to tell all my buddy Pat fans but for some reason they thought they could compete in the East lmao
Habes - CJ Stroud being the GOAT surprised me. I don’t watch college so not like I had any expectations but wild that Bryce Young went ahead of him. Loved the Lions last season and thought they’d be very good. They look a little fraudulent of late but hopefully that turns around.
Chipper - One thing that surprised me- probably how good CJ Stroud has been. I already thought he'd be the best rookie QB- but not THIS good.
One thing that hasn't- the Falcons have Falcon'd it up as usual. FedEx boy (Arthur Smith) needs to go.
