1. The draft is done. Duncan and TMac were the obvious 1 and 2. Is there any surprises or things you would have done differently in the rest of the lotto?
Braz - I agree with the obvious 1/2. I was surprised to see Foyle who will be an elite blocker fall so late and I could have seen Billups go 3 but he fell to me at 5. Most picks were fine. In a league not so inflated we have these guys coming in hopefully at starter level with a shot to develop. It will be interesting to see how Spencer makes a player build coming into an Ashes file.
Nanz : I drafted 9th and I thought Tim Thomas being there was pretty good, nice little surprise for sure. I would have thought some bigs would be drafted higher like Foyle and Pollard but nothing really out of the norm. I was KVH after what he did in the last BBS was interesting… I thought people would try to get him higher.
mouse : 1. Alittle surprised Billups went to 5. Would have assumed he was the consensus #3 player in the draft, but I guess due to BBS history those other 2 guys ended up being the better sim players. Draft was pretty top heavy so not much criticism moving past that I guess.
zinger : I was surprised that Billups didn’t go 4. Most people were surprised he didn’t go 3, but Davis looks worth the pick given his age and potential. Post TC, it looks like BJax should have gone lotto. Dude is a stud.
2. Who was the best pick outside the lotto?
Braz - Tony Battie seems to have starter level base ratings so let's go with him. I also thought Ron Mercer would have went higher.
Nanz : Not far out of the lotto but I liked Battie. Nice pick, looked like a solid player and I was thinking about him at 9 to be honest. Just looked like a good safe pick.
mouse : 2. I like the Battie pick at 16. I think Sargo had him going lotto in the mock draft which made sense to me. Battie has always been a solid big every league I have seen him in.
zinger : Bobby Jackson. 18ppg on juicy % with only 1.2TOPG. Uncamped. Yah, he’s going to be really good. I’m not sure I can tank with him.
3. The 2nd rd looked dreadful. Do you think there were any possible sleepers there?
Braz - I do not think there is much tbh. I took some PG who mentioned he could block because why not. Blount Newble and Vaughn all look like they would be solid off the bench.
Nanz : Man I hope so… well I did hope since i got one of the rookies but I just cut his ass so yeah no more. I hope no sleepers are there but im sure there will be a few. Spence is gonna give us some twists.
mouse : 3. I'm hoping Mark Blount can become somewhat serviceable as a rotational big down the line, but other than that I didn't really notice anyone else that stood out to me.
zinger : I don’t see any tbh, it wasn’t that deep of a class this year. I’m expecting some sleepers in future drafts.
4. In FA, Ed Smith was given a max 3 yr deal. Was that a good value signing?
Braz - I offered him a decent chunk of change too but also on a 3 year deal. I figured most of the league is high contracts from creation draft anyway so getting an 18 year old street ball guy is like buying a top 10 pick. Honestly no idea if he pans out. I assume he won't score alot.
Nanz : Great value in my opinion. 3 years so you have birds but also not a full 7 in case he stanks. Not much in FA for the first few years and with talent being low, might as well take a chance on a 17 year old rookie to pair with Kobe and Big Z.
mouse : 4. Yeah, I mean I had interest in him and offered a 6 year max just figured at 17, and with us being a young team with a ton of cap, I was willing to take on the gamble. A guy that young why not try and take a gamble early on in the league anyway.
zinger : I liked it. If I had max cap I would have given a full max. I did have like 7.5M and offered a full max off that. He would have been a nice addition to JO and Ricky.
5. The 76ers went shopping for talent to trade. Do you think they will be successful in this?
Braz - I think they will certainly fail and have no cap the rest of the time going into CY because of this. Least they got Tmac. Weird moves.
Nanz : Going multi years on vets when you are trying to tank doesn’t make sense to me but what do I do. He should be tanking his butt off!
mouse : 5. I just wanted to be above the minimum salary cap, and grab a couple guys who might have trade value, and if not then we at least have some expirings in 2/3 years to use in deals with picks for some upgrades down the line.
zinger : I liked Dyess a lot and hope it works out for mouse. He’s a good gm and a good guy. He did have a poor TC which stinks, but there is always hopeS
6. Any good under the radar signings?
Braz - A few good MLE signings in Oakley and Outlaw. I think Chris Anderson is a good signing but woulda given him more years to have BIRDS. Outside of that Warriors retail Olden.
Nanz : Ed Boooooooger SMITH! Come on baby!!!!! Oakley to the sixers was nice and the bird man for the Knicks too. Adding some depth to challenge the Spurs.
mouse : 6. I think we added some solid vets. I also like the Minor signing for Celtics. They were able to take a solid contributor away from San Antonio which could help them big time this year.
zinger : I loved Bo Outlaw. Offered for him too. Bo with camps will be a pretty good big and at worst, an elite third big.
7. Compared to the creation draft, are you still happy with the direction you choose to go?
Braz - Not really but idk if id be happy the other way either considering my options at my draft slot. I certainly goofed in my trade down with NJ. It's funny, even when you think you get the best of greeme you dont. Id be most happy if I was lucky enough to have a top 5 pick and someone like Kobe or KG who I really would love to build around.
Nanz : I was going to get Kobe no matter what it took. The price was high but I love where we are. WE traded our 97 for our 98 and 99 back so we can try to tank. Kobe is already so nasty I love him.
mouse : 7. Yeah, I mean we got TMac this year, and hopefully we can try and land 2-3 really good prospects this upcoming draft. Hopefully by CY we have enough youth developed to keep and also look to use in trades, while also looking to FA for players as well.
zinger : I am. We are in a good place and can still build through the draft for two more seasons given how raw our talent is. I am not going to rush building this team.
8. Which team that traded their draft picks (not creation picks) are in the worst spot currently?
Braz - I would have said the Lakers since they looked like a sure lotto repeat but we came to terms and sent those picks back for Tim Thomas which was fair. End of the day his deal would have been worth it given it is Kobe... Outside of that there is not much middle ground here. Either you are good or you moved creation picks to be bad. Last lotto we saw picks 18-29 all be traded picks which is another way of saying that everyone who moved a '97 first infact made playoffs. Even the Utah Jazz. That all being said I think the only bad spot you can be in is if you traded your picks and you WANT to rebuild vs riding the same team out. For example it seems the Celtics would like to do that but Raps wont trade the picks back. That doesnt mean DBW wont return to the eastern finals but just that he might not have as much fun doing so.
Nanz : looking at the teams that gave high picks this year I guess it’s the Heat Suns and Jazz. Suns have KG so they will be fine, so I guess I’ll go with the Heat and Jazz. Jazz have solid young pieces with Mash but the heat are pretty old which might be problematic.
mouse : 8. Not to sure. From my personal experience having about 6 teams draft rights, the only team to reach out has been Charlotte about getting their picks back so I think they wanna go in a different direction from their original plan but they still have a great young core nonetheless.
zinger : I’ll saw the Wolves. Marbury and SJax are huge TO whores. At least the Raps have Duncan.
9. Do the Spurs repeat?
Braz - I think they have the team to do it one more year with McGinnis. Will suck to have to chase Kobe in titles down 2-0 out the gate... However I do not think they repeat given the odds of another team pulling one off. Lots of other good teams.
@nnaz: probably…. MJ is nasty and they still have a full squad. Jim and Dik up front is nasty for sure.
mouse : 9. Right now it looks that way but the Celtics could come back stronger or even some other teams. Just haven't paid enough attention to notice who else is a legitimate contender right now.
zinger : It’s possible. I think they will miss Minor though. He was a hell of a player for them. Again, watch out for the Celtics.
10. What are you expecting next year for your squad?
Braz - Well given we have two hopeful scoring options coming via the draft we will be better than last year unless Billups and TT suck. We also signed Drazen who I think will be 22 ppg at the least off the rip...but hes 33. Part of me would love to get a reset in and prove I can make a good DC. Can a line up of Camby- Joe Smith- Tim Thomas- Drazen- Billups- Donyell as 6man do that? Seems solid on paper idk... The smart thing to do would be to move Drazen for a first and try to tank for another asset and hopefully a top 5 pick. Let's see preseason I guess.
Nanz : I hope big Ed and Kobe to have monster TCs and Big Z a solid one just to know hes not a complete waste. Ideally we can get a top 7 – 10 pick and continue to try to add talent. This year will be a lot more fun at least with Boooooogz.
mouse : 10. Still looking to get a top 5 pick this season but at least we have some rookies that we can assess over the course of the season. Mcgrady will be getting significant minutes as well as some of the other rooks.
zinger : Hoping to add another top 5 pick to this squad, while Davis, JO, Dejan, BJax continue to develop. I am not sure if I can fully tank with Dejan and BIax, but we’ll see. Both had saving TCs and will be great with camps.
Braz - I agree with the obvious 1/2. I was surprised to see Foyle who will be an elite blocker fall so late and I could have seen Billups go 3 but he fell to me at 5. Most picks were fine.
