During this period of wait between the draft and FA, I sit down with the most respected GM in BBS,
Respected GM !
1. How has your time been as the Grizz GM thus far?
It's been enjoyable getting back here. The rebuild hasn't been too exciting so I am glad to get back out here and try and compete.
2. What's the plan for this season?
At least try to make the playoffs or have a team that can make the playoffs easily in the CY next year. Obviously want to build something that can compete for several years, so I am being a little delicate right now in how I approach things. I will make more moves (or try to) after FA
3. What's been your favorite Grizz roster so far?
I am going to blank on a lot of my rosters. A lot of my really good teams had some significant injury problems throughout the year. I really like the 2005 team though because that was the team I thought had a best shot at a title.
4. What's your biggest regret (trade, signing, etc)?
I don't think I have a very regretful signing in this version of BBS. Trade wise I think I got way too in my head regarding Michael Redd in that deal. Redd was such a dynamic player and I felt like his defense was getting in the way of me going to the next level. Also I took a step back I felt with the Reggie Miller for LJ trade as I couldn't replicate LJ's offense on my team.
5. On the other side of things, any move you regret not doing?
Mike offered me a Lilliard and Harden for AD trade a while back and I said "No" a little more quickly than I should of on that. I think it was because I just drafted AD. I don't know if I regret it but I definitley should of looked at it longer especially in the situation I am in currently and some of the offers I could of made to shore up the 3-4-5.
6. Looking at the past draft, you didn't seem a big fan of it. Why?
I wasn't. Outside the top 2 picks there seemed to be major issues all the way down with everyone still left. The draft was devoid of really solid "A" potential shooters and had very little depth at PG. I didn't really feel like the top guys were a fit
7. You took Clint Capela in the lotto. Why?
I made the trade with Chipper because I didn't love any one at three spot and I knew Eddy was thinking about trying to rebuild. I didn't anticipate Chipper to take Smart so that was interesting. I was contemplating either Wiggins and Capela at 5 and when Wiggins was taken it made my choice easy.
Capela's floor is still a pretty good shotblocking/rebounding big and he is a good insurance policy if Noah doesn't resign next year.
8. On the topic of the draft, what was your favorite pick? Worst pick?
People harped on Chipper for Smart at 3 but I didn't hate the pick as much as others. Smart has really good notes and his floor to me is a dynamite 1-2 backup off the bench. I don't know what the floor of a lot of the other top 10 is.
I think the pick I hated the most is maybe Jabari? I am a little skittish about dudes who never made it with "A" potential. Thought Gordon and LaVine were better picks at #6 even though Jabari had pretty decent notes.
9. There has been discussion of ratings. What do you think of them currently?
I don't have issues with ratings outside of my next comment.....
10. If you can change anything about the league, what would it be?
A lot of tweener type SF/PF don't have playability in this league. Tobias Harris is one of them. Jerami Grant will be another. These tweener types who can't start at SF need to receive rebounding and/or strength camps off the bat in order to ever have to potential become a starter and I think that just doesn't make sense for guys who never will be stars.
I just don't think there is a whole lot of continuity of how we look at these guys as a whole. Why can Illyasova play SF but Harris can't? The guys that I have mentioned if they played PF it is during an era of small ball lineups which this sim engine wasn't created in. Both these guys as far as I know have both been SF/PF guys their whole life and we should give SF playability to those dudes moving forward.
11. Fire one current GM. Bring back one past GM.
Habes is too fresh. I am not firing anyone, but I'd love to see DBW come back at some point. A guy who hasn't been around is Ashes, hope all is well with him. Skillz? Donatello? Crazy Mike?
12. If you can switch rosters with anyone, who would it be?
Philadelphia has been really solid lately and I like what he has done with that team.
13. Any Christmas plans?
South Florida for 10 days, should be nice.
