1. The Celtics took home the championship. After the creation draft, the Spurs and Celtics looked like the two best teams and both took home the titles in the first two years. Going into year 3, are you expecting more parity in the league, or are the Celtics and Spurs still the best teams?
DB - I think we will see more parity in the league. Slowly and surely. Those teams are older and will get worse after another TC. The league will definitely begin to change and the power will shift. I don't expect them to win it all again but I guess with MJ on one and Hakeem on the other you never know.
Chip- I still think they are the best teams- but the rest of the league is definitely catching up. They definitely have the age catching up with them - but they’re still some of the top teams in the conferences. And the playoffs are a crapshoot anyways.
Andrew - Maybe not immediately in this next season but very shortly given the age of both teams. The Celtics could definitely regress given the number of players on their roster but what they do have is probably enough for a postseason birth even with average or below average depth and missing starting positions
2. Looking back to the 1997 draft, there were several steals and some guys drafted high that didn’t sim as expected. Give me your top 5 re do from that draft.
DB - 1 - Tim Duncan
2 - Chauncey Billups
3- Ricky Davis
4 - Ron Mercer
5 - Bobby Jackson
Chip- 1. Tim Duncan
2. Chauncey Billips
3. Tracy McGrady
4. Ricky Davis
5. Scot Pollard
I think T-Mac at SG was the mistake. He’s going to be fine when he plays the right position. And Pollard- had he started, based on his averages, would have been a 12/11/2.7 big with low turnovers. You can’t ask for much more. (Yes I am biased as hell)
Andrew - 1. Tim Duncan
2. Chauncey Billups
3. Ricky Davis
4. Ron Merce
5. Scott Pollard
3. FA looks weak again and it doesn’t appear that Spencer added any FAs (as of yet). Next year we will see guys from R2 and on enter the FA pool with most of the league having cap space. It should be a wild offseason. Do you think a deeper FA and guys with birds will league to an influx in transactions and movement.
DB - I think every season will get better and better. Yeah, having guys with birds and a deeper FA will definitely help the stagnant league transactions. I think you had two different philosophies going on. Team's that wanted to win and team's tanking. No one really had assets to move and it was hard to get better because not many good players were available. It will get better.
Chip- Next offseason is gonna be NUTS. A bunch of the firsts and seconds won’t re-sign so it’ll be chaos. And a lot of teams will have cap too.
Andrew - Yes. A lot of things will happen to facilitate trading such as teams facing CY, teams being able to sign fillers for trades, and lots of cap to go around. Expanded resignings will also be valuable. The cap situation inherent in creation draft salary structure does make trading difficult the first few years, but I expect that to change shortly
4. Maybe trading and activity is already back as we have seen numerous deals today. Pick one of the big deals and discuss what you liked and didn’t about it.
DB - I loved my deal to start the offseason off! My team was really going nowhere. Only had AI, Glen Rice and Coleman. Would have been another 40-something season and lose in the 1st or 2nd round. Fuck that! Tearing it down and trying over again. Loved I was able to get Dirk and my first to tank next year. Also adding Nazr helps things out as well. I think I'm off to a good start.
Chip- The AI-Dirk deal is really the main one to talk about. I liked it for both. Magic got a lot of talent AND their pick back, and AI is absolutely a stud that was needed in Philly. Great move.
Andrew - I'll have to go with the low hanging fruit here and pick the ORL/PHI trade. Orlando gets a lot of value and I like it slightly more for ORL but its a close deal value-wise which doesn't always happen around here.
5. The lottery is almost complete. It’ll probably be done before I even get these questions out. Which pick so far was the biggest surprise to you?
DB - Nothing really shocking tbh. I would say Al Harrington dropping so far is wild. I thought he might go higher. Someone take a chance on big Al.
Chip- I thought Harrington would go higher, and that Nesby would end up in the lottery for sure. Otherwise- nothing too shocking. I guess Bibby kind of went lower than I thought he would but you could also argue he went exactly where he should.
Andrew - Just outside the lotto but I didn't care for the Candy pick at 14. He does one thing well (have strength) and everything else that makes a good big is poor, according to notes. Maybe the Warriors are taking a flyer on the A potential but he seems like of a waste of a pick and is very unlikely to contribute in any meaningful way
6. Most of us are big time sports fans. Rank your top 3 teams and give me an idea of the unholy things you’d do to see your team lift a championship banner.
DB - Jets. Yankees. Knicks - I would do unholy things to see the Jets win a Super Bowl. No doubt about it. Knicks to win a title would be hot but it's hard to gauge because I haven't felt excited about a basketball team in awhile lol. Yankees winning a title again would always be amazing. Nice to be able to see multiple titles so I'm not going to say I would do unholy things as of right now. I need a Jets victory sooooo bad.
Chip- 1. Braves
2. Liverpool
3. Hawks/Falcons/Atlanta United
the first two teams I’ve seen recently winnstuff- and I want more. I’m not confident the Falcons or Hawks will ever win anything in my lifetime. And ATLUTD needs to FIRE BOCANEGRA.
Andrew - 1. Giants- They've won recently enough and in huge ways. The past decade plus has been tough but it was worth it for 07 and 11.
2. Knicks- There are no words, partly because it seems so hard to fathom. The precautions the city would have to take if the Knicks were in the finals with a chance to win would make Philly blush.
3. Mets- Where do we even start? The highs and lows since Cohen took over have been extreme. They're almost universally regarded as the most bumbling organization in baseball and I would love to see them win, but it wouldn't even light a candle to the Knicks winning
7. New Year is here. Did you guys have a resolutions? If so, are you sticking to them or are they dead already.
DB - Not really anything crazy. But some personal resolutions and to continue bettering myself in multiple ways. Continuing to hit the gym and growing in my career! Let's have a 2024 fellas!!
Chip- I want to cut down on soda and lose weight. I haven’t been good with that so far. :/
Andrew - I had a good diet and workout regimen before the holidays that I want to get back to. I have a very general resolution which is that I want to be more purposeful with my time. Not great to have resolutions that are so general but here we are
