1998 181 Raptors Sign PG Jeff McInnis for $72,000,000 over 5 years.
McInnis goes from one of the best teams in the league to one of the worst. A Raptors team looking to build something from the ground up with Tim Duncan and an abundance of draft capital. Does McInnis step in as the point guard of the future or does Matt look to move him for more assets. His clock is ticking as far as CY goes so the idea might be to hold onto him.
1998 181 Nuggets Sign PG Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf for $14,000,000 over one year.
Rauf's first year in the league was insignificant but he became a notable name last year when he became the starter for the Milwaukee Bucks producing some very productive numbers. He goes from a minimum contract to a huge raise making 14 million this year. With Mike Bibby and Chauncey Billups already on the roster, look for Denver to sell high on Rauf.
1998 181 Thunder Sign PG Steve Kerr for $14,016,085 over 2 years.
Kerr is a veteran guard known for elite perimeter shooting and has produced well in limited minutes. He could potentially see increased playing time in OKC.
1998 181 76ers Sign PG Dana Barros for $10,500,000 over 2 years.
Quite frankly we needed a point guard and although Barros was at the bottom of our list, he's a stopgap in the meantime until we find something better. We'll probably camp him a little bit in the mean time.
1998 181 Magic Sign SG John Starks for $3,000,000 over one year.
Starks has been a reliable depth piece for the Magic and returns for his third season with the ball club.
1998 181 Nets Sign SG Aaron McKie for $28,696,185 over 5 years.
The Bucks lose another player in McKie who the Nets decided to invest long term in over the next 5 years. He's 26 years old with good ratings and stats in limited time. I believe he's also uncamped as well, so look for the Nets to really work to develop him and use him as a core piece over the foreseeable future.
1998 181 Raptors Sign PG Khalid Reeves for $9,000,000 over 3 years.
Reeves doesn't really wow me and although his contract isn't terrible, it's kind of pointless with the abundance of guards the Raptors already have. Seems like they probably just wanted 1 or 2 and got unlucky and grabbed everyone they had bid for lol.
1998 181 Cavaliers Sign SF Dennis Scott for $4,950,000 over one year.
Scott returns to the Cavaliers for his third season. Solid depth piece off the bench and a veteran leader in the locker room.
1998 181 Rockets Sign SF Derrick McKey for $3,000,000 over one year.
Could have seen McKey go for the MLE but the Raptors got one of the better perimeter defenders for cheap. He returns to Houston for his third season.
1998 181 Raptors Sign PG Melvin Booker for $20,000,000 over 4 years.
Another one of the PGs signed by Toronto. He's definitely looking to move them for assets but don't really see what he could get for these guys to be honest.
1998 181 Spurs Sign SF Sean Elliott for $4,500,000 over one year.
Elliot joins his 3rd team in 3 seasons and should provide the Spurs with decent depth at the SF position. He's been a 10-15 minute per game guy over his career and could potentially see an extended role in San Antonio this season.
1998 181 Warriors Sign C Olden Polynice for $9,600,000 over one year.
Olden returns to Golden State on a 1 year deal. He's been a formidable starting center for the team during his tenure and is a double digit rebounder. I'm assuming he'll be starting this year until the team feels that Olowakandi is ready to take over the role.
1998 181 Bucks Sign C Dale Davis for $4,500,000 over one year.
The Bucks get a very solid post defender in Davis for the MLE. It's surprising that some guys got huge 1 year salaries and a guy like Davis didn't. Very good get for the Bucks at the MLE.
1998 181 Warriors Sign SF Cedric Ceballos for $10,800,000 over 2 years.
The Warriors were able to bring another rotation player back in Ceballos who is a decent all around wing who provides them with much needed depth.
1998 181 Clippers Sign C Eric Montross for $4,500,000 over one year.
Montross has been the starter in LA for 2 seasons, and he returns to the club for his third season as the starting center. Similar to Dale Davis, just a solid big. Your prototypical FBB big.
1998 181 Knicks Sign C Will Perdue for $6,000,000 over one year.
Perdue is arguably better than guys like Davis and Montross, hence the $6 million dollars. He blocked more shots than both guys last year in just 20 minutes. We could probably see him blocking at least 2+ blocks this year if he is a starter. He leaves Cleveland to join the Knicks for an increased role, and could potentially see an even bigger raise next season if he turns out to have a great season with the Knicks.
1998 181 Warriors Sign SG Tim Legler for $1,440,000 over one year.
Legler is just a solid shooter off the bench for any team. Warriors get him on the books cheap.
1998 181 Knicks Sign PF Popeye Jones for $6,000,000 over one year.
The Knicks add another solid big while the Bucks lose another player. The Knicks should have a much improved post defense this year with Montross and Jones anchoring the defense until the young guys are ready.
1998 181 Heat Sign SF Johnny Newman for $1,200,000 over one year.
The Heat bring back veteran wing Newman on the LLE. With not much money to spend, the Heat are very limited this free agency.
1998 181 Nets Sign C Chris Dudley for $4,550,000 over one year.
Dudley returns to the Nets adding to their depth in the front court. Dudley is a solid guy to have off the bench who can start if needed.
1998 181 Lakers Sign PF Michael Smith for $4,500,000 over one year.
The Lakers bring back a 26 year old big who has some promise and could be a nice piece to develop if the Lakers had long term interest. He will most likely start for them this year considering how little depth they have in the frontcourt.
1998 181 Heat Sign C Isaac Austin for $1,200,000 over one year.
Austin spent his first season with the Heat and was productive as the starting center. They were able to bring him back cheap since he's truthfully not highly coveted but he is one of the better rated rebounders at his position.
1998 181 Trail Blazers Sign C Vitaly Potapenko for $4,500,000 over one year.
I like Vitaly considering his age. Wouldn't have been a surprised to see a team gamble on him and throw him a long term contract but the Blazers were able to get him for the MLE.
1998 181 Heat Sign C Elmore Spencer for $859,020 over one year.
Another one of those low cost depth signings for Miami. He returns to the team after spending last season with the club. The Heat seemed to identify guys they liked having and focused on bringing those same guys back.
1998 181 Wizards Sign C Clifford Rozier for $1,200,000 over one year.
The Bucks lose a 4th player in free agency although Rozier was never a main guy in the rotation. He's still only 26 years old and could have some room for growth if given the minutes.
