In this article, we will be examining the top playoff teams in each conference, and ranking them, based on ability and how they finished the season. we have some interesting bottom seeds in the playoffs who ended up making it in with trades at an exciting deadline.
1. Spurs- MJ won the MVP and is the captain of the top team in the playoffs. Kobe somehow moved his future draft picks which I guess could be pretty good if these old guys kicked the bucket, but allowed him to acquire 20 Ppg Minor and young promising point guard Bobby Jackson. I honestly think this team is better than ever. They are elite on both offense and defense. It was upsetting to see the spurs get bounced last year, and they’re coming back with a vengeance.
2. Dallas Mavs- With 58 wins the Mavericks unloaded with incredible 116 points per game this year. They’re starting five capable of 15 points per game while they have three guys who are capable of more than 20. Reggie Miller caught absolute fire second half of the season kept on the market but didn’t strike any huge deals. I can see this team looking different next year but for now it’s pretty close to perfection for our league and salary cap. I think they have a really good shot at the title, but they had to get through a gauntlet of the west.
3. Boston Celtics- DBW did a lot of zigging and zagging this year. For a minute, I didn’t know where they would end up, but they got slightly younger and didn’t fall off that much production wise. With the addition of mighty mouse and the admiral, they acquire two pretty good nicknames, and really good players to put with Scottie Pippen. This doesn’t have many flaws and I wish for competition sake they kept Charles Barkley but I wouldn’t have been able to pass up that either. A good chance at the title, and a better set up for the future.
4. Golden State Warriors- they make the top four after an impressive 55 one season. This GM specialty has been getting the most out of disregarded players acquired for less than their value. This might be the last season for Clyde and Golden State roster with defense and scoring all around. Have a really tough first round matchup, but if they can get through the dream anyone on in this playoffs. I think Gary Payton’s defense will prove a huge advantage.
5. Bucks- this is a special team with advantages all around. They have an elite scorer in Houston. He’s one of the lgs best bucket getters. Kidd is one of the leagues, top guards and such a good rebounder for his position. He is a matchup nightmare from offensive players, and one of the A+ defenders. They have been a lot more productive with their bench than other teams, and have low turnovers all around other than Kidd. It’s impressive that despite their teams turnovers, they are seventh lowest in that category.
6. Phoenix Suns- John had one of my favorite drafts and has really been able to sustain success in the regular season. Toni has been one of the best small forwards and they have very good defense and low turnovers all around. However, we all know the most important thing about this team is Kevin Garnett. Not only is he simply incredible but his eligibility at small forward makes one of the best assets in the league.
7. Nets- they were able to improve at the deadline, adding another score on the wing and rider. It’s just enough time to tinker with the DC and get it right. GM tends to find ways to have his team out Perform expectations. They have three starters capable of 20 points and who don’t really shoot. Seems like a formula for success in New Jersey.
8. Blazers- this is the one team that is way higher on the rankings than their record and playoff slot allows. They traded for the best player on the file per Ashes in The Dream, improved his point guard position and an elite rebounder in Dudley. They finish the season, just strong enough to go into the playoffs, and that’s all that matters. They face off and television‘s best matchup versus the Red Hot Golden State Warriors.
9. Hawk- Last chance to make noise with this group. The team that they put together but let’s be honest is he gonna be able to get all of them back unless everyone is just maxed? I wish Chipper traded for a point guard but probably better he didn’t move any more picks. Possibly the first round exit, but they have enough scoring and rebounding to make it interesting.
10. Cleveland Cavs - I like all the players in the starting five. Sam Cassell has been a lot better than I would’ve thought at draft but Steve always gets the best out of his players. They have a plus rebounder shooting guard and small forward solid bigs. I wouldn’t be facing Cleveland in the playoffs they should be a matchup nightmare with the right dc.
11. Raps- we really do like this team in Toronto built around the first pick in league history Tim Duncan. They acquired Marcus Camby from me at the deadline who helped improve the defense, which is already the strength of the team after signing Jeff McInnis. I do have some questions around this team scoring ability to keep up in the playoffs. They should’ve also dealt Anthony Parker if they wanted to be a real threat. However, I like they have done here coming out of picks in the creation draft. Good team for time to come.
12. Thunder - Immediate downgrade in the power rankings because of the Gm great work on a 51 season. This has lights out scorers all around and slightly above average big men. If only he had the courage to move his pic at the deadline for a better big, they would be dangerous.
13. Philadelphia 76ers - this team has had its ups and downs, but I first want to give it to mouse for making the playoffs and turning it around. He made some pretty big ball trades. He brought in both Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury also shipped out Antonio shortly after acquiring him. Right now I just don’t love the big man to win playoff games. I think they could be pretty good next year since the GM is active on the market.
14. Grizz- this team was once one of the top five in the league but the three year contracts were set to expire and the general manager, decided to make some trades thinking about the future. He acquired several future picks And got a younger big in Don Ried. They still have top player, Larry Johnson, and scoring machine Post Malone. This team can easily win some games, but they are a shell of their former selves after moving Drob.
15. Miami Heat - his team started off not so great and Eddy finished the season pretty strong to get them into the playoffs with the cheeky reset. At 41 wins the heat, take the eight seed in the east. They barely have the positive differential so it makes you think they’re just an average team. They have one of the best players in the game in Alonzo Mourning averages 25 points and almost 4 blocks a game The pg Brandon does well but turns it over a lot. So if those stay in control he’s going to win. Lastly Jackson’s field goal % has really skyrocket of the second half. Let’s see if Eddy can make a good DC and sneak a couple out.
16. Kings - At 39 when this team is the worst in the playoffs. I think originally they were actually trying to tank, but the problem is they have one of the best players on the file.As you can tell Shaq can win games. But as his team is aged, it only gotten worse and now there’s not much around the big man. Assume Shaq will win a few games maybe even taking home a series if he’s super dominant, but as the eight seed, I expect the kings to be bounced.
