We're going to be taking a look at some of the notable free agent signings from this past offseason and see how some of these guys are doing. Some have already been traded, and we're also going to negate mentioning my own signings (Hedo/KMart) to focus on the rest of the leagues free agency.
2004 181 Lakers Sign PG Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf for $4,500,000 over one year.
Mahmoud has ended up having a really nice BBS career for himself being more of a journeyman throughout, although his tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks really put him on the map and got him paid significantly over the years. The Lakers were able to sign him to an MLE contract and even at 35 years old he's leading the Lakers to a 25-13 record averaging over 20 points per game yet again.
Fun fact he actually played 97 games due to in season trades. Never seen a player with more regular season games.
2004 181 Hornets Sign SG Larry Hughes for $39,600,000 over 3 years.
The Hornets signed Hughes but ultimately traded him back to Minnesota where he was drafted. His first go around didn't pan out but he blossomed in New Jersey for 2 years before finally getting the long term deal he probably deserved last season. Hughes is averaging just about 18, 5, 5, and 2 which is what the Wolves envisioned when they drafted him years ago. I would love to see Hughes at point guard but don't think it's a realistic option here.
2004 181 Trail Blazers Sign SF Darius Miles for $40,500,000 over 3 years.
The Blazers were able to bring back Miles, and according to sources the 2 other teams with substantial cap space didn't even bid for him. Miles has great ratings but the stats weren't quite amazing which made it difficult to gage whether a max was worth it for the forseeable future. The Blazers were able to get him back for 3 years and right now he's having the best year of his career.
2004 181 Hawks Sign SG Tony Delk for $12,000,000 over one year.
Delk has been a solid player throughout his career but after this past training camp he really improved his offensive game and has blossomed in Atlanta with a career year averaging 18 points a game. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the off season as far as the next contract he'll be getting whether it's from Atlanta or another team.
2004 181 Hornets Sign C Gheorghe Muresan for $10,000,000 over one year.
Muresan was ultimately dealt to the Atlanta Hawks where he's once again having another solid season. 10+ rebound guy with close to 2 blocks per game. He's always been one of the better bigs in the league despite the B- defense rating.
2004 181 Timberwolves Sign C Stromile Swift for $30,166,500 over 4 years.
Swift was signed and ultimately dealt to Phoenix. He's on a 4 year deal at an average annual salary just a bit over the MLE but overall he's been a slightly above average big man so far in his career. I believe he was just dealt again but this time to the Dallas Mavericks. He's a 2 block per game guy with just under 9-10 rebounds as well. I think he's best suited in a 3rd string big role though on a contender.
2004 183 Bulls Sign C Zydrunas Ilgauskas for $6,000,000 over one year.
I was surprised Z didn't get a multi year contract elsewhere. If I remember correctly without confirming, I believe he's uncamped and he's already pretty decent as is. Throw a +25 at him and get him on a 3-4 year deal at $6-7M annually, and you got yourself a great value big man for seasons to come.
2004 182 Nets Sign C Lorenzen Wright for $8,000,000 over one year.
Wright was another guy I was expecting to get a multi year deal but despite the sexy ratings he really doesn't produce the statistics you'd expect. Doesn't really block shots which is what everyone wants from their bigs. I do wonder if he gets the multi year deal this off season though. Wright was ultimately dealt to Toronto in a blockbuster deal for Duncan, and then sent to Minnesota for a draft pick. He's actually been playing the best basketball of his career since returning to Minnesota with averages of 15 points and 10 rebounds a game.
2004 184 Nuggets Sign SG Jerry Stackhouse for $6,000,000 over one year.
Stack was a guy I had bid on with a multi year offer with the intention to trade, but he decided to return to Denver on a 1 year deal. He was traded to Utah, and then sent to Golden State where he's really having a lowkey productive season offensively. Just under 20 points per game in less then 30 minutes on 46/82/42 is crazy efficient numbers. You can make the argument he's having the best season of his career at 32 years old right now.
2004 185 Bulls Sign SG Derek Anderson for $1,200,000 over one year.
Getting a B A- scorer for the LLE is crazy good value and with his production over his career thus far, I would have expected an MLE offer or even a 2-3 year deal. He averaged 16 points per game last season, and right now is averaging close to 12 points per game in just 21 minutes.
