Draft: Creation Draft, Round 1 Pick 9
Teams: Heat, Nuggets, Mavs, Thunder
Drafted in the 1st round of the creation draft, Zo seemed like an obvious choice, for many reasons, to get picked by the Miami Heat. Zo was a top-tier player for the Heat, including winning his lone DPOY award in 1998. After a tough 98 for the Heat, Zo was moved to the Nuggets where he was a consistent defensive anchor down low while providing solid offense at some points. While the Nuggets were clearly a top team, they were unable to get the job done in the playoffs. On offense, Zo was showing a consistent decline from the 99 season on and this limited his opportunity to land on a title team. In the playoffs, Zo struggled early on as he was barely mentioned in the top leaders in blocks, rebs or scoring. In 99, things changed as Zo averaged 14.1 rpg and 3.9 bpg for the Nuggets. In 2000, Zo topped those numbers averaging 15.2 rpg and 4.4 bpg. 2001 was Zo's last season as a playoff game-changer, averaging 14 rpg and 3.3 bpg. In fact, after the 2002 season in which he rejoined the Heat and won 46 games, he did not make the playoffs again. Zo was a clear game-changing player on defense and for a while, he was more then solid on offense. Zo not winning a ring does not take away how great his defense was. HOF worthy actually.
