Alright, sent these questions out last week and got all the responses back too late to post on Friday, so posting now. Here goes!
1. Well, we've restarted! Were you happy about the restart? Upset?
quicky - Considering the state of my team I was not too bothered either way! It did allow me to escape my CY so that was nice. I think a restart was needed to get some new GMs and bring some life back to the league. Actually having interest in earning camps and building a team after about 10-20 seasons of having none shows it did its job I suppose!
Seattle Supersonics - Happy I got a team didn't i?
kobe - Very happy, I'm surprised spence did it tbh. But its clearly been a good thing for the league.
atscott31 - The restart was a few years overdue and things definitely got stale. Overall I am very happy with the restart but I understand that some GM's weren't so happy, particularly the guys who had a competitive team for years to come. I think that was few and far between though because even a guy like John who had a potential multi-year dynasty didn't complain at all that I saw and has been active in the restart
2. Is this the file year you would have started with- or would you have chosen a different year?
Svedda- Starting in the 90s is fine. We kind of did everything else already in the last version so worked out pretty well. Get to use some early stars as their younger selves so they may end up a bit different. Can't really go any farther back without causing issues due to nobody knowing who anybody is really if we are being honest! And going forward to the 2003-2008 range we'll get there anyway within a decade.
marty- This year is fine it's around the time I was really into basketball too. I don't watch today's NBA at all so starting anytime in the 90s was going to be great
Kobe- Yea this is a good year since we were coming up on the 90s in the old bbs and started early 2000s. So this fits perfectly.
Andrew- I think this was a very good year to pick because it hits a nostalgia sweet spot for most of the league who were either just starting to watch NBA basketball or for some of the older guys were already fans in their teens. Starting a few years later would have been fine too but we also started in 2000 last league so a few years earlier brings some change.
3. Do you think ratings got overinflated in the last BBS version, and what would you do to help curb inflation?
Svedda- Uh yeah they got way out of hand maybe midway through and there was no going back yet we tried by killing drafts at the end which was a lot of fun! In my failed league I decided against putting guys like Luka at SF to play at PG and I hope we commit to that here with Westbrick and eventually Luka himself coming back or Simmons or whoever. If this SG/SF limitations is going to be a thing we also need to stay firm on that! I know it's just Byron Russell but we need hard rule on what is allowed or not. Is it bballref positions? Is it if they have C rebound then who cares? I just want clarity!
marty- I mean compared to what? Real life? People want to cry and complain about ratings but have no idea how to curb it.
Kobe- Definitely. Just keep ratings low for draftees and I would do less camps but its hard to keep ppl active with shitty drafts and no camps so eh it'll get inflated eventually but just don't let it get out of hand. No pot boosts or 4th ACs this time.
Andrew- This is an obvious yes. Very few players in the current file would find a starting job on any 4 seed or higher playoff team in the previous version. I like the idea of rewards for activity so wouldn't do away with any camps or post pads, but would be fine with slight modifications to the rules. I think the potential reset for specific players needs to go. In general Spence can do a lot by trying to actively avoid power creep in each of the files that get produced going forward
4. Now that the draft is done- is there any team you look at that you're like "how the hell did they put THAT team together?" Good or bad.
Svedda- I will say it is hard to believe lumley traded all his picks and ended up with that roster. Everybody else who traded picks either has solid depth or two big names and then he has ... that. I'm sure some may feel the same about my roster though! In terms of good, I guess the Heat just because of Dumars falling so far and Brandon/Jackson being third round picks. Though we were trolled with Brandon doing 4 topg in test sim!
marty- Lumleys team is pretty bad considering he traded all his futures you would think if you traded all your futures you'd at least have a playoff team
Kobe- Lots of bad teams. Hated all the guys that traded out to tank. So fucking boring and stupid. Feel like some guys didn't do a good job choosing a clear direction. Lums not building a very good team after trading all his picks for mashburn isn't good.
Andrew- Nothing that I can see that's obvious. About halfway through the season I plan on putting an article together that compares round 1 drafting order to winning %, with some outliers dropped like everyone who traded all their picks to tank this year. The guys who drafted early and got the studs are most likely going to be in much better shape than the back half of the drafting order
5. Is there a player picked in the 3rd round or later that you're surprised lasted that long?
Svedda- Can't really say anybody falling to the third was a big surprise. Maybe Rodman since old guys were going pretty early and A+ rebound here is a big advantage or Brandon due to lack of PGs but that 4 topg scared people off. Joe Dumars at 108 was the biggest surprise since he's a solid 20 ppg guy with low turnovers even at his age. Why did lumley draft Hersey over him exactly?
marty- Probably Rodman just because defense is valued but I'm assuming since he didn't get many blocks in the file people passed on him
Kobe- Not really, all the top talent was gone after the first/early 2nd so it was just a matter of pick your scrub after that. There were definitely some bad picks though.
Andrew- From a biased perspective I am glad I got to pick up Travis Best when I did. He's not particularly good by any means but the A potential doesn't usually fall through the cracks. Nothing surprising at all though.
6. This draft class looks like it's going to be great. Besides Duncan and McGrady, anyone in particular you'd like to have on your team at some point?
Svedda- It looks fine but the reason I eventually decided against tanking was the lack of depth beyond the top 5 or so. There are a lot of tankers and you end up at 7 or 8 with Kelvin Cato well that is not ideal to say the least. I would want to have KVH trapped at PF or not just because I consider him a friend.
marty- Stephen Jackson if made right should be really good
Kobe- I have a thing for Ricky Davis since I drafted him last creation draft. Billups looks great too. Kinda falls off after that.
Andrew- Always enjoyed Chauncey Billups in real life and he was an outperformer in the previous version. Interested to see what KVH's ratings are going to be since he was the initial player in the previous file that first started the rebounding wings discourse. Depending on the notes and ratings I can easily see him going top 5 since rebounding is definitely soft right now.
7. What team will Shohei Ohtani be playing for next season? (if you don't like MLB- I can't think of an alternate question so just pick a random baseball team for the lolz)
Svedda- Uh I have no idea really but I'll guess the Dodgers because they have a ton of money still don't they? Or I thought I saw something about Seattle but why would he want to go there. Maybe our TWolves GM was just trolling about that. I know the Yankees just added Soto so guessing not there! And the Mets suck and so does Lindor.
marty- Seattle mariners to play along Ken griffey jr
Kobe- He should come to Braves but he'll go wherever pays the most. (chip- 100% on all counts- $700 million is nuts)
Andrew- Tough call. I don't think money will be primary driving factor as he is getting 500+ from any team he realistically has a shot to sign with. Uncle Stevie might throw him 600+ but I don't see him coming to New York. Probably stays somewhere on the West Coast.
8. Any fun plans for the holidays?
Svedda- Not particularly! Weekend before Christmas is usually busy with family gatherings but that is nothing new and or unique! Otherwise I'm in my Scrooge mode.
marty- Just visiting family in Galicia
Kobe- Not really just gonna be working and spending time with family. Nothing too fun. Hopefully can get some good gifts from santa.
Andrew- Standard family stuff. Trying to spend some more time with my parents than usual since I have been out of state for a couple years prior to moving back to New York. They also need a bit more help with my grandparents who are both pushing 90 and don't come to my parents house anymore for holidays unfortunately.
9. I was gone for a bit, and now I'm back. How are y'all doing?
Svedda- You left?
marty- I'm doing great can't complain and you? (chip- I'm great!)
Kobe- Life is good right now. Can't really complain.
Andrew- Status quo. Just moved which is never fun but I am saving a lot of money compared to my old place.
