Draft: Creation Draft, Round 1 Pick 20
Teams: Wizards, Pistons, Hawks, 76ers
Drafted in the 1st round of the creation draft, Penny was the 3rd PG taken going behind Nash and Kidd. From the beginning, Penny was always a unique PG as his rebounding ability was a big plus for the Wizards. While Penny struggled to handle the ball, he was able to contribute well on D as well as on offense as his scoring numbers would typically be over 23 ppg. Throughout his 14 yr career, Penny was a triple-double threat every time he stepped out on the court and he racked up over 500 double-doubles in under 950 games. In the playoffs, while Penny did not really step up his scoring, he was still a consistent threat. In 2000, between Penny's MVP seasons, he was able to push the Wizards to the finals. After the 2001 season, Penny was sent over to the Pistons in an offseason blockbuster that included JRich and 5 picks. While Penny remained a very solid PG and was able to help the Pistons have a winning season for the first time since 96, his numbers took a bit of a dip. He was eventually sent to the Hawks and then retired with the 76ers. Penny was one of the top PG's in the league during his early seasons and while his numbers started declining later on, it's hard to ignore how good Penny was in his prime.
