The Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a trade sending 2-time All Defensive team forward Robert Horry to the 76ers for PG God Shammgod and the rights to the Indiana Pacers 1999 1st round draft pick. Horry signed a 6 year extension prior to the trade, before being officially sent to the 76ers on Sunday.
Horry is a defensive mastermind known for his elite post and perimeter defense, with the capability to block shots and get steals as well. His offensive game is limited, but he has the ability to shoot the three ball at an above average percentage. At 28 years old, Horry will be entering the prime of his career with a +14 remaining in camp availability to further improve other areas of his game moving forward.
It was reported that the 76ers were interested in drafting SF Andre Kirilenko with the pick, but felt as though he wouldn't be available with the selection. With that said, according to sources, Mouse wanted to use the draft asset to bring in an elite defensive specialist to work around Laettner, Iverson, and Marbury. Mouse confirmed these reports during the press release.
"We felt as though realistically some of the guys we would want with that pick weren't going to be there anymore on the draft board. We also shopped the pick around the league and truthfully didn't receive one offer. Teams aren't dealing right now and we wanted to be able to bring in some established talent prior to free agency. We had interest in some other guys who might have been older, or more offensive minded, but for what this team needs moving forward, we felt like Robert was the missing piece to the puzzle."
"Being able to go into free agency with Keon Clark, Christian Laettner, Allen Iverson, and now Robert Horry gives us the ability to solely focus on bringing back Stephon Marbury and solidifying our starting lineup as one of the stronger starting 5s in the league. Adding Christian gave us the 3rd scoring option we felt like we needed, but being able to add Robert gives us the defensive anchor on the perimeter we truly needed as well. Clark, Horry, and Iverson are some of the best defensive players at their positions and we're happy they belong to us. We also wanted to show Stephon that we're serious about building something special here in Philadelphia for the long term. Letting Antonio go was a concern for some of our players, but I think now they see the vision. Being able to add what we added will help us in the long run immensely."
The 76ers will look to free agency to fill out the remainder of the roster with veteran talent that they feel will make sense with the guys currently on the roster. Marbury, as well as Glen Rice and Bryan Russell will be priorities to return to the organization on multi year deals.
